11th Annual Gualala Salon and Salon des Refuses

North Coast Artist Guild Presents. Annual Juried Exhibit.

Opens February 9 from 4-6 pm, exhibit up through March 3, 2024. Gualala Arts Center. Free Admission

The Gualala Salon & Salon des Refusés is our local premier juried art show of the year. Hosted by the North Coast Artists Guild, this show features some of the best work of both local and regional artists. First Place award is $1,250, Second Place is $1,000, and Third Place is $750.

Swane Liisberg had the good fortune to be placed in prime location of the exhibition and in addition, he also secured an honorary prize. A great experience. Thank you.

The famous Salon des Refusés in Paris in 1863 was a reaction to the hundreds of master works that did not make it into the formal Salon. All works will be displayed, and those not chosen for the Salon (in the Burnett Gallery) will be placed in the Elaine Jacob Foyer of the Gualala Arts Center, and are eligible for People’s Choice Awards ($125 for first place, $100 for second place, and $75 for third place.) Embrace the Moment

When humanity touches you and reminds you that ‘life and people are good’, one must embrace the moment. So that is what I did when I read what Henrik Liisberg, local guest artist at LyndonDesign Gallery, did for our health community. Many many people deserve to be commended, but this arrived in my inbox and touched my heart. Henrik had all the proceeds from the sale of this painting, Corona Cure, be donated to RCMS, our local health center. A mystery donor made an offer to Maynard and Lu Lyndon: If the painting sold for $2,000 and the buyer agreed to give the painting to RCMS, the sale amount would be matched, so RCMS would receive $4,000 and the painting.

A couple came to the gallery, heard the offer and left. They returned to purchase the painting and donated it to RCMS. The mystery donor matched the sale price and RCMS received $4,000 and the painting. Henrik, you are a community hero. $4,000 goes a long way to support increasing needs. A million thanks to him, to the LyndonDesign Gallery, to the mystery donor, and to the couple who bought the painting.

Knowing Henrik for close to twenty years has brought many smiles and stories. He is kind and spirited. Henrik grew up in Denmark amongst painters. After his graduation in 1974 from Denmark Design School he moved to New York and soon after San Francisco. He is well known for his many award winning furniture and custom chair designs. In 1992 he and Hanne Liisberg moved to Sea Ranch/Gualala and currently have a home in Tiburon too. Henrik always wanted to create and become the artist that he now is. My favorite saying coming from him “I paint what I saw, not what I see” to which he says is the “privilege of being a senior”. We are all better in our world because of people like you dear Henrik.

“In the beginning of the war against Corona, we had no idea what was going to hit us and how serious this was. People died from this and my painting reflects the first couple of weeks during this situation. Fortunately, things have improved over time but this was the mood back then”
